Representative of the “old” banker’s Zurich (think surly waiters, wooden walls, parquet and red leather chairs), the city’s most famous restaurant is the only place you can get a Picasso, Chagall and Miró with your Zürcher Geschnetzeltes (sliced veal in gravy). Initially a meeting place for musicians, actors, authors, and artists, some used to pay for meals with artwork. Unsurprisingly prices match the décor. Wines off the French- and Swiss-heavy list can go for 20 Swiss francs—a glass! Yet with the quality held high, it’s still a must for visitors. Dress smart.
